In present times, it's quite usual that an employer recruiting to a job vacancy will get hundreds of applications. To give yourself the best chance of standing out from the crowd and getting that job, it's important to show the best of yourself. We can help you to do this. See below for more information.

Often the key to being successful in getting a job is applying for one which is matched to your personality, interests and qualifications. We can show you how to find the most suitable vacancies and where the best places to search are.

A CV is a record of your qualifications and employment history which prospective employers often request as part of the application process. As it is often the first impression an employer will get of you, it's important to get it right!

Our advisers can help you to format your CV properly, decide what information to include and how to tailor it to suit the job vacancy.

When sending a CV to an employer, you might need to send a cover letter with it and our advisers can also help you with wording and layout these.

There's definitely a knack to completing application forms correctly - using the right colour ink, writing clearly enough, answering the questions correctly and following instructions.  There might also be a section asking why you think you're suitable for the job, which lots of people struggle with.  Our advisers can show you the best way to complete a form, either by using a mock one or one which you've been sent for a job vacancy.

So, you’ve found the job, sent off your application form, and you’ve been invited for an interview – Does that thought make you panic?

Don’t worry, we can help – Remember that first impressions are important in an interview.

What to wear:

  • Choose clothes that fit with the job you are applying for, for example if you are applying for an office job, you should wear smart professional clothes

  • Make sure your clothes and shoes are clean and tidy

  • We suggest testing your outfit the day before the interview, just in case you need to make any changes (you don’t need this last-minute stress on the day of your interview)

How to prepare:

  • Plan your journey so that you will arrive on time. If you are driving, where will you park? If you are travelling on public transport, do you know where you are going?

  • Read the job application and specification for the job, consider different questions that you might be asked, and plan how you will answer them. Think of specific examples from past experiences that you can refer to. The STAR method is a good way to prepare for interview questions. Make notes (most employers are happy for you to refer to your notes during the interview)

  • Research the company and think about questions you can ask them - this helps to show that you have researched the role

  • Often at the end of an interview you are asked if there is anything else you’d like to add, so prepare for this. Use this as your opportunity to shine, tell them why you think you're the right person for the job, and use this opportunity to tell them about anything significant that you haven't already mentioned

  • Remember to take everything you’ve been asked to take to the interview - often you are asked to bring qualification certificates and ID documents – refer to your invitation for the interview for the full list
