Bradford College Students On the Right Track for a Career at Northern
Earlier this week Andrew Marden, Train Care Centre Manager Neville Hill assembled a fantastic team to help engage with young engineers from across the Northern East Region.
Over the last 4-5 years the Communities Team East Region has proactively engaged with Higher Education providers from across regions to promote the opportunities they have at Northern and in particular engineering. Working with Bradford and Calderdale College engineering departments, 15 students who have the skills and desire to get into the rail industry were identifed and invited to attend a day at Neville Hill Train Care Centre. Not only to see size and scale of rail operations in the North but also to meet 1st /2nd /3rd year apprentices to get a real personal inside view of life as a rail apprentice engineers. From studying, exams, the challenges studying away from home and the challenges of being a woman in what is still perceived as a male dominated profession.
Thanks go to the 4 young apprentices for sharing their experiences with young people from across the region. A special mention for Jamie (female apprentice) for addressing some of the issues the young women had in the audience.
The young apprentices gave the visiting students the opportunity to see big engineering in the flesh on a scale they could not have imagined at the start of the day. It was fantastic to see the support, advice and guidance they gave young people who attended this event on the day.
